Five Sober Activities in Los Angeles for People in Recovery

Living sober in the entertainment capital of the world doesn’t mean you are missing out.

Take advantage of LA’s great weather, outdoor lifestyle, and incredible food scene.

Here are five sober activities you can do in Los Angeles that do not involve drinking.

Hike Runyon Canyon or Griffith Park

Get incredible city views, fresh air, and a solid endorphin boost. Griffith Park also gives you access to the Observatory and miles of trails.

Runyan Canyon offers three different types of trails: beginner, intermediate, and advanced, depending on your physical fitness level. Most people spend an hour getting from top to bottom, with some time allotted for enjoying the scenic view.

Griffith Park, on the other hand, offers a wide variety of hiking trails, some taking around an hour while more adventurous routes last up to three hours round trip.

“Physical exercise is a great way to stay sober as it not only helps to reduce cravings, but it also regulates emotions and stress, helping a vulnerable person in recovery create a healthier daily routine,” says Flo Rivers, a Los Angeles sober companion who helps recovering addicts with their daily routines.

Beach Day at Manhattan, Venice, or Malibu

Walk the strand, swim, surf, people-watch, or just sit with coffee and a book. Sunrise and sunset beach time is especially grounding.

Manhattan Beach is well known for its world-class volleyball, while Venice Beach offers a more eclectic crowd of artists, surfers, and skateboarders, and Malibu is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the California sun.

Getting sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D, which supports mood, immunity, and physical healing, all of which are important for recovery.

Explore Museums and Cultural Spots

Visit The Getty Center, The Petersen Automotive Museum, or LACMA. Many are free or low-cost and make for a fully educational and inspiring afternoon.

The Getty is great for lovers of world-renowned works of art. The Peterson Automotive Museum is filled with rare supercars and iconic film vehicles, such as the Batmobile. LACMA has a diverse collection of ancient artifacts.

Keeping your mind actively engaged through art, history, and discovery is a powerful way to support sobriety.

Museums offer an immersive experience that stimulates curiosity, encourages reflection, and provides a healthy mental escape without the risks that come with alcohol.

By spending time learning something new and exposing yourself to different perspectives, you replace old habits with meaningful experiences that promote personal growth, emotional balance, and long-term recovery.

Enjoy LA’s Live Entertainment Without Drinking

Los Angeles offers endless sober-friendly entertainment options. Venues like The Laugh Factory and the Hollywood Bowl make it easy to enjoy a great night out where alcohol is optional, not the main attraction.

On any given night, The Laugh Factory features local and national comedians delivering high-energy, interactive stand-up.

The Hollywood Bowl, an iconic outdoor amphitheater, hosts everything from orchestras to world-class pop artists, all set against stunning views of the city.

Experiencing live performances creates genuine laughter and real emotional connection, rather than the temporary, artificial highs associated with alcohol or drugs. Building authentic human experiences like these is a key part of lasting personal growth and recovery.

Eat Your Way Through the City

Skip the bar crawl and opt for a food crawl instead. Los Angeles offers an incredible range of flavors, from street tacos in East LA and Korean BBQ in Koreatown to fresh sushi in Malibu or a relaxed afternoon at the Farmers Market in Hancock Park.

If you are on the Westside, the Abbott Kinney Food Truck Fest, held on the first Friday evening of every month, is a great way to sample diverse cuisine while enjoying a lively, social atmosphere without the pressure to drink.

Eating your way through the city engages your palate and introduces you to new flavors, cultures, and textures. It creates richer, more meaningful experiences and lasting memories, all while avoiding the physical, emotional, and long-term costs that alcohol can bring.
