If you’re currently planning a holiday trip to the Midwest, Plains, Great Lakes, or East Coast, you might want to unpack your bags and stay at home.

A bomb cyclone and bitterly-cold, possibly life-threatening low temperatures are in the forecast and will create a nightmarish travel scenario for the 100 million Americans planning an excursion for Christmas and Hanukkah.

The developing “bomb cyclone” will impact areas from the Plains to the mid-Atlantic and has been called a “once-in-a-generation” event by the National Weather Service.

“Some of the parameters of this intense storm are climatologically ‘off the charts’,” the weather service’s office in Buffalo, New York, said Tuesday, while the Minneapolis office said that the storm “is still looking to develop as a high end, life-threatening event.”

The result will be a widespread flash freeze in many areas with temperatures rapidly falling below the freezing mark.  Florida could see its coldest Christmas in over three decades.

The National Weather Service emphasized that the felt temperature will be much colder than the bitter cold air temperature itself.

“Many will experience MUCH below average temps this week, ~20-30° [F] or more below,” it said in a social media post. “Keep in mind, wind chill will make it feel even colder than this!”

Wind-chill temperatures could dip as low as -40° F (-40° C) across the intermountain-west and northern/central Plains and some parts of the country could see wind-chill temperatures as low as -70° F (-57° C), a level that can cause severe frostbite in less than five minutes.
