General Motors’ Buick Avenir concept car
General Motors is once again the leader in U.S. auto sales, reclaiming the top spot from Toyota in 2022.
The General, as the company is sometime referred to, reported a 2.5% increase in 2022 sales to 2,274,088 vehicles, ahead by some 166,000 cars over Toyota’s 2,108,458 units.
Despite industry-wide supply chain disruptions, GM was better able to meet the strong demand for cars and trucks than Toyota over the past 12 months.
The pandemic-induced supply-chain crisis resulted in inventory shortages and rising material costs. A persistent chip shortage hobbled production at automakers across the globe and kept vehicle prices elevated.
GM was the largest carmaker in the world for 77 years until losing the title to Toyota in 2008.
