FC Barcelona Defender Jules Kounde Apologizes To Sevilla Fans For Euphoric Goal Celebration

February 6, 2023

FC Barcelona star Jules Kounde has apologized for the way he celebrated Jordi Alba's opening goal against his former club Sevilla at Camp Nou on Sunday evening.

The French World Cup finalist joined the Blaugrana from the Andalusians in the summer as part of a reported €50mn ($54mn) deal.

The transfer has proven to be a shrewd investment, with Kounde outstanding at right back as part of a stingy defensive that is on course to make history while having conceded only seven goals all season.

Against Sevilla, Barca had the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points after closest rivals Real Madrid slipped up and lost 1-0 at Mallorca.

They took this by running out 3-0 winners. But for a good 58 minutes, however, Xavi Hernandez's men struggled to find a breakthrough which is why Kounde celebrated Jordi Alba's opening goal with such vigor.

Many that support his former employers found it distasteful, however, which has forced the 24-year-old to issue an apology through his Twitter account.

"I was always grateful for the opportunity to wear the red and white jersey and for the love I received during my time there," Kounde tweeted on Monday morning.

"That is why I wanted to apologize for the goal celebration which, in a moment of euphoria, was exaggerated on my part. I wish you the best, always."

Though Kounde was as classy as ever here, there is no need to be sorry and surely not every Sevilla fan has been offended by his conduct.

In an age where footballers will even refuse to celebrate goals against former teams that deemed them surplus to requirements and mistreated them, it is refreshing to see the defender show such passion for the club that now pays his wages.

What should have received more attention is how he has made amends with Alba after being red carded for throwing a ball at him in 2021/2022 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, with the pair clearly close teammates now.

Kounde should also be commended for his commitment to the cause. Unlike rumored Barca target Benjamin Pavard at Bayern Munich, he has never once protested about being played out of position by Xavi and has happily allowed Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen's central partnership to prosper as a result.
