Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has declared his players know how to beat the league leaders Arsenal.

United remain the only side to beat Arsenal in the Premier League this season, when they won 3-1 at the start of September, and now face them again at the Emirates stadium on Sunday afternoon.

“We know what to do and we have to be really good, we need a really good performance,” Ten Hag said. “If we do, I think we have a good chance to get a good result.”

Despite overcoming Arsenal earlier in the season Ten Hag could still see they were building something special, which has seen them remain unbeaten and at the top of the table.

“In the moment we played, you could already see that the manager and coaching staff was already for a long time working on that team. You see really good structures in the team and I think that they even improved during the first half of the season. There is a really good spirit as well in that team.”

Arsenal are now five points ahead of Manchester City with a goal in hand, while United are eight points behind them in third place.

“It’s obvious they are in a really good run, I think they deserve the position where they are now,” Ten Hag said. “It’s a really good structure, there’s a really good mentality, winning attitude in the team, and that’s why they are now top of the league. They are in a great run but it is up to us to beat that run and we will do everything to do that.”

United’s dominant Brazilian midfielder Casemiro will not be available for the trip to north London after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Wednesday this week.

However, Ten Hag revealed he is not too concerned about his absence. “Last time we beat Arsenal without Casemiro, so we have an idea of how to do it,” he said.

The Dutch striker Wout Weghorst, who is on loan from Burnley, made his debut for United this week against Palace, and Ten Hag has confirmed the club are interested in signing more new players in the January transfer window.

“I think as Manchester United you always have to look for solutions, and always you have to look for better and this what we will do. We will be doing our research and if there are opportunities, we have to go for it.”

Ten Hag welcomed back Jadon Sancho, who has not played since United’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea on October 22, to training this week, but was uncertain whether he would be in the squad to face Arsenal.

“I can’t answer that question. He’s making the next step. On Tuesday for the first time he was in team training. Team training is the final training before a game, so we will extend that in the coming days, [the] coming week, and then go step-by-step.”
